When we try to meditate with the goal of quieting our minds, we are not meditating. Whenever we seek results, there can be no meditation.

Or something like that.

These tracks were the product of a series of failed attempts to make music without attempting to make music. To play with cassette tape loops and digital samples until I forgot that I was trying to make something out of them.

I made these for myself, gave a copy to my mom and a friend, and then set them aside. When I listened back this morning, they made me feel very calm; and if I have learned anything while trying to better understand myself, it is that nothing I feel is unique to me. So maybe they will make you feel calm too.

The sounds you hear were created by Teenage Engineering’s OP-1, the KORG Monologue, KORG Kaossilator, Omnichord, digital and analog tape loops, piano, acoustic guitar, ukulele, and the human voice.

All of the tracks on Tape 2 were recorded to cassette tape, sped up or slowed down, and set to field recordings of fire in May 2020.
